After entering the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Syracuse University Athletics program is experiencing an identity crisis.

Having entered a new conference, SU Athletics is questioning its ability to measure up to other universities in the ACC, and whether SU’s most identifiable landmark, the Carrier Dome, is outdated.

Although it is not an immediate priority, SU Athletics should neither consider replacing the Dome nor doubt its ability to attract recruits and draw fans from miles away.

During this past summer, SU athletic officials discussed the future of the Dome in this new athletic environment. They said that to remain competitive, updated facilities are a must.

The Dome may not be considered a modern or advanced facility, but it is a staple of the university and the city, and it is filled with history and spirit.

The skyline view of its cloud-like roof is synonymous with the experience of arriving on campus for many SU students. The attendance record-setting games that have taken place in the Dome mark years of enthusiastic fandom for SU Athletics.

Instead, SU Athletics should continue to improve the Dome. Recent changes include a new video ribbon board. However, further advancements should be considered to make the Dome more physically and aesthetically pleasing.

The athletic department should also focus its energy into the $17 million football practice facility currently in the works. Potential recruits will spend the majority of their time at this practice location, and will be more focused on the appeal of this facility, rather than the vastness of the Dome.

Potential recruits should not view the Dome as an unimpressive or outdated facility. If anything, it should be seen as a representation of passionate fans and a thriving sports culture – something they should yearn to be a part of.

The Carrier Dome is a fixture of SU, and will therefore become a fixture of the ACC.
