I am writing in response to the letter from student Ross Lazerowitz that appeared in Thursday’s Daily Orange. I want to share some thoughts regarding Lazerowitz’s concerns.

Chancellor Nancy Cantor and Vice Chancellor and Provost Eric Spina proactively reached out to the Student Association several weeks ago because they wanted to share with SA and student leaders the presentation they have made to faculty and staff from the schools and colleges regarding critical opportunities and challenges facing Syracuse University. They delivered an hourlong presentation at the April 22 SA general assembly meeting.

Knowing the meeting had a full agenda, the chancellor and provost were aware of and sensitive to SA’s time constraints and full agenda, which included a forum on potential Schine Student Center redesign and reconstruction, a presentation from the Student Engagement Committee and general SA business. They also knew in advance of the general assembly meeting that Provost Spina already was scheduled to meet with SA leaders subsequent to that night’s general assembly — a meeting that took place this past Thursday and was characterized by robust give and take.

Chancellor Cantor and Provost Spina are readily available to answer questions or listen to concerns from students, whether at events, in person or via email, and both have a strong record of doing so. They look forward to continuing to gather student input on the vital issues facing SU.

Sincerely,

Kevin Quinn
