The Syracuse Police Department responded to a reported robbery at Recess Coffee on Sunday night.
The coffee shop is located at 11o Harvard Place. SPD responded to the incident at around 8:34 p.m. Sunday.
Lt. Matthew Malinowski, the SPD’s public information officer, said in a press release Monday morning that a male suspect, whom SPD later identified as Timothy Montone, entered the building with a knife and demanded money from the register.
Employees at the coffee shop handed Montone cash from the register, and Montone left the store on foot, according to the release. SPD located a man near South Beech Street and Cherry Street matching the description provided by those at the coffee shop.
SPD said Montone was “very uncooperative” during the encounter and that he stated that he was going to kill everyone on the scene, threatening suicide by cop. Montone then pulled out a knife from his pocket and tried handing it to an SPD officer before officers tackled the suspect to the ground and secured him and his weapon.
SPD arrested Montone and charged him with robbery in the first degree, petit larceny and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the release.
