Syracuse defensive specialist Lauren Hogan was named to the 2020-21 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman team on Monday.
With 4.75 digs per set, Hogan led the conference and had the second-highest total by an Orange player since the 25-point scoring format was instituted in 2008. She also had a .988 reception percentage, receiving 337 balls and committing just four receiving errors.
She is the fourth SU player to earn ACC All-Freshman team honors. Former Orange award winners include fellow teammates Polina Shemanova (2018) and Ella Saada (2017).
Syracuse was in need of a new libero after the departure of senior and defense leader Aliah Bowllan, but it did not take long to find a replacement. In Hogan’s first match of her collegiate career against Pittsburgh this season, she recorded 21 digs, which was a higher single-game total than all but two of Bowllan’s 2019 matches.
The remainder of the season brought more success for Hogan, as the libero earned the ACC Freshman of the Week award twice for her performances against Boston College, Wake Forest and Duke.
In two matches against the Eagles in the fall, Hogan recorded 37 digs, including 22 in the first match. In two matches against the Demon Deacons and Blue Devils in the spring, the freshman recorded 44 kills, including a season-high 28 against Duke.
Hogan also recorded one of her two kills of the season against the Blue Devils, where the freshman sent the ball to Duke’s side with a swing while facing away from the net at Syracuse’s end line.
