Entering Winter Break on an eight-game losing streak, Syracuse was searching for any way to get its mojo back.

“Losing sucks,” senior captain Allie Munroe said in early-December. “We learned that (during the losing streak) … We can’t let up now.”

At the Theresa Humes Invitational in Montreal, the Orange may have found what they were looking for.

Though the exhibition games don’t count for SU’s overall record, Syracuse (4-14-1, 4-3 College Hockey America) won all three games in Canada, outscoring its opponents 17 to three. In past years, the Orange wouldn’t play all through break, so they scheduled this tournament to avoid taking a month off.

“We’re making this a hockey, educational and cultural three-day trip,” Flanagan said in 2018. “We’ve got a long winter break, and these exhibition games will hopefully get us back in shape before we hit the game against RPI and get back into conference play.”

In their previous eight games, the Orange had scored 13 goals. The three-day, 17-point offensive outburst in the exhibition games may be what Syracuse needs heading into conference play, which starts Jan. 11.

In SU’s first game, a 4-2 win over Nipissing University, Emma Polaski, Kelli Rowswell, Lindsay Eastwood and Abby Moloughney scored.

In the second game, Syracuse capitalized on junior Anonda Hoppner’s hat trick to blow out St. Francis Xavier University 7-0. Jessica DiGirolamo, Logan Hicks, Moloughney and Rowswell also found the net.

Syracuse continued its dominance in the third and final contest of the tournament, defeating Concordia University 6-1. Polaski and sophomore forward Victoria Klimek each scored twice, with Moloughney and Hicks also supplying goals.

Ady Cohen, who hadn’t played since Oct. 26, started in net in the team’s last two games. She recorded 52 saves and allowed one goal in two exhibitions.

In the College Hockey America conference, all six teams make the end-of-season tournament, and seeding is based on conference record. Despite its eight-game losing streak, Syracuse sits in third place heading into CHA play, with 13 of its final 15 games coming against in-conference foes.

Syracuse’s next game is on Jan. 8 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4 p.m.
