Syracuse (9-12, 0-3 Atlantic Coast) split a doubleheader Wednesday, defeating Yale (0-3), 5-1, before losing 10-8 to Pennsylvania (5-4) a day after beating the Quakers. Jocelyn Cater struck out seven in her win over Yale before giving up five runs in a relief loss to Penn in Clearwater, Florida.

The Orange got to Yale pitcher Lindsay Efflandt early while Cater held the Bulldogs at bay in the opener.

Sydney O’Hara doubled to lead off the bottom half of the second inning before advancing to third on an error. Two batters later, left fielder Annie Toczynski singled to give SU a 1-0 lead.

After setting down the first six batters, Cater allowed a walk to lead off the third before allowing the runner to score on a single three batters later. In the bottom of the inning, first baseman Corinne Ozanne doubled before O’Hara homered to take a 3-1 lead.

Cater didn’t allow a run the rest of the game before Lindsay Taylor took over in the seventh. By then, the Orange had tallied two insurance runs on the strength of a Maddi Doane triple in the fourth. SU won, 5-1.

The second game featured six pitchers and 18 total runs. SU kicked off the scoring in the top of the first with a three-run home run from O’Hara. Penn answered back in the bottom half with a three-run homer of its own.

In the second, SU had four hits and two hit batters, leading to five runs and an 8-3 lead for O’Hara on the mound. The sophomore lasted through four innings, giving up two more runs, before Lindsey Larkin took over.

Larkin pitched an inning before Cater replaced her. After facing 25 batters earlier in the day, Cater failed to record an out, giving up four runs and the lead before ceding the mound back to O’Hara. She allowed one run, credited to Cater, before getting the third out.

SU was unable to score in the final stanza and fell 10-8. The Orange has five more games this weekend in Clearwater, Florida during the USF Michelle Smith Tournament, which starts Friday.
